Maths

Mathematics is important in everyday life and equips children with the tools needed to understand the world around them. The mathematics teaching in our school is geared towards enabling children to develop positive and enthusiastic approaches to mathematics as well as enabling each child to develop within their capabilities.

We teach a range of mental strategies as well as formal and informal written calculations.  We also promote cooperative learning, problem solving and investigative work so children can use and apply what they have learnt in real life contexts. The school uses models and images in support of pupils when making calculations.

Times Tables

We are keen to encourage all of our children to learn and be confident with their times tables as this helps them with many aspects of Maths.

Each year group from Year 2 to 6 will have times table practise. Within this time children practise their target time’s tables along with developing their speed and fluency of answering times table questions.

Brain Teaser Competition

If you want to enter this week’s competition, all you have to do is write your name, class and the answer on a piece of paper and post it in the ‘Maths competition box’ (this will be in the school entrance). Miss White will be checking the answers every Friday. Anyone with a correct answer will go into a hat and one lucky winner will be chosen. This will be announced during celebration assembly of the following week.

Good luck!
Miss White

30 day maths challenge – Just for FUN!

30 Day Maths Challenge

NSPCC Numbers Day

On Friday 3rd February, the whole school took part in NSPCC Numbers Day. We had lots of fun taking part in maths puzzles and games. There were two competitions held during the day and lots of children took part: Times Tables Rock Stars and Sumdog. Miss White gave out an abundance of prizes and certificates on Friday’s Assembly to celebrate all the achievements throughout the week. Whilst lots of children did really well, Zayan Nasim in 4B has to have a special mention. Not only did he come first in our school, he also got the number one spot in the whole of Bradford! He is definitely a maths magician in the making!

Creative Curriculum Day

On Thursday 19th January, the whole school took part in a ‘Creative Curriculum’ day. When we got to Miss White’s classroom, every table had a different maths game on it. We had 10 minutes to play each game before moving onto the next. We had a blast of a day!

Maths Fun Club

Every Monday lunchtime, children from Y3 and Y4 meet in Miss White’s classroom to play different games – all involving maths. Our favourite at the moment in the ‘magnetic darts’ game, where you have to through six darts and get as high a score as possible. There are lots of other games we enjoy playing too: Hit the Button (we have to try and beat Miss White), Shut the Box, Maths Dobble, Guess my Number are just a few that are on offer.
