Year 4 Home Learning Week 4

Hello again.

I have just found out that you can get free ebooks from Bradford Library.  If you are already a member you just log on with the number that is on your library card.

https://www.bradford.gov.uk/libraries/library-services-online/e-books/

If you are not a member people over 16 can join on the following page:

https://www.bradford.gov.uk/libraries/library-services-online/join-the-library-form/https://www.bradford.gov.uk/libraries/library-services-online/join-the-library-form/

They have access to lots of books to read electronically and once downloaded you do not need to be on the internet.

As well as this you can access a wide range of children’s books on Oxford Owl.  These include the type of books that we use at school and are of different levels to suit different children.

For children practicing their phonics go onto Read Write inc.  Otherwise you can look by age or book band levels. The children will know what colour band they were on at school and can slowly push themselves up to the next couple of bands. If you are unsure start on level 10 (white, brown) and adjust accordingly.

This is a guide to work for week 4 that will keep you up-to-date with your studies and help when we are all back at school. Also, remember that work has been set on Purple Mash, you can log onto Mymaths, Scratch and TTRockstars as well as the resources and links on the school website.

Maths:

We will be using the white rose home learning videos and work that is linked to the lessons that we do at school. First watch the video, then do the worksheet either by printing it out or in a book then check your answers using the answer sheet given. Please click on the website link below.

If you need any support with calculation methods, the school’s calculation policy can be found on the website: https://www.hstb.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Calculation-Policy-2017.pdf.

Reading:

This week’s reading includes a link for you to listen to extracts of the David Walliams books as well as a reading comprehension about the author David Walliams.  Each day at 11 o’clock part of one of his stories is being read.  If you miss it you can listen on catch up.  There is a link to this page.

Writing

Sentence level work

Watch the two videos about apostrophes – one for contraction the other about possessive apostrophes.

This week we are starting with a film and working on writing a story.

https://www.literacyshed.com/the-lighthouse.html

Reading and discussion:

  • Opening scene, discuss the setting and the title – What is the film going to be about?
  •  Pause the film after the lighthouse keeper slams the window shut – what does he think about the people outside the window having fun?
  • Why does the author put this scene in? (to make you think the villagers are up to no good/untrustworthy)
  • How does the creator build up the tension in the film?
  • When the lighthouse keeper breaks the lamp, pause and discuss possible outcomes.

Writing ideas

  • Write a description of the setting.  Think about where the lighthouse keeper is sitting.  What can he see in his room and outside of the lighthouse?  What can he hear? How does it make him feel?
  • Pretend you are the lighthouse keeper. Talk about what happened and how you felt.
  • Create a story board of key events.
  • Write a diary entry of the events as if you were the lighthouse keeper.
  • Write own story where the problem is solved in a different way.

Look at this amazing sentence written for the story.

Suddenly, the bright lighthouse flickered away to darkness. Astonished, horrified and confused the villagers froze: they froze with no idea of what had happened…

Take a look at the stories written by children from Moorfield Primary School and the film made by Will and Alfie for ideas if needed.

If you need any further support, please contact school through schoolclosure@hstb.co.uk and someone will get back to you when they are able to. Please write the class teachers name on the email.

Best wishes and stay safe,

Mrs Day, Mrs Horsley and Mrs Mason.
