Year 5

Welcome to the year 5 class page.

About Us

Welcome to Year 5! In 5HM our teachers are Mrs Horsley and Mrs Mason and 5C’s teacher is Mr Clark. Mrs Mason is our Deputy Headteacher and Phase Leader for Years 5&6.

Our topic this term is We Are Warriors, focusing on World War 1 and developments in weaponry through the ages. Alot of our work in English, Music, Art, Geography and DT is linked to this topic and we have been totally immersed in our class reader War Horse. Next half term we will be reading The Boy at the Back of the Class and learning about Refugees also.

Our Learning From Home Links page has links to Oak Academy and BBC Bitesize and, in the case of Bubble closure, this is where we put the home learning activities for the week. We also set online homework every week on My Maths, Purple Mash, Read Theory and TT Rockstars. Homework and spellings are set on a Friday and this is also the day we have our spelling test.

We are encouraging the children to be regular readers and read for 20 minutes every evening. Remember to get your planner signed every time you read to an adult! Reading books can be changed every day – once brought into school all books are quarantined for the week.

Our PE days are on Monday and Friday – remember to wear your PE kit to school!

News and Events

Bradford Peace Museum

Last week we welcomed Shannen from the Peace Museum to Year 5 for a workshop entitled Everyone Comes From Somewhere. We learnt about the people throughout history who have made Bradford their home and shaped the way it is today and thought about Bradford as a ‘City of Sanctuary’ for refugees. this linked well with out RE topic, thinking about how we could make our community a more respectful place.

Nell Bank
We really enjoyed our visit to Nell Bank. This was linked to Science and we investigated different animal habitats in Middleton Woods. We also enjoyed a muddy welly walk, identifying trees and spotting different fungi in the woods. The best part was being outside all day and enjoying the wonderful Nell Bank surroundings, especially after our bubble closure!

On 1st October we had a ‘Bubble Day’. We investigated bubbles in science and had a fantastic time seeing who could create the largest bubble!

October is Black History Month. We had a visitor come into school to teach us djembe drumming. It was great fun!
